In Bolivia, more than half of births are delivered inside the home. With hospitals being far away and costly, mothers and babies die every year due to complications during birth. In many cases, locally trained midwives are the only ones available to ensure a healthy birth for a baby and mother. A gift of $6 can provide a midwife with the basic essentials for a safe delivery, nothing more than a small sheet of plastic, a shoe lace (to tie off the umbilical cord), a sanitized razor blade and a bar of soap.
