Esperança in Arizona

Esperança’s Domestic Program began in 2000, and is uniquely positioned as the leader in providing health education and resources to Maricopa County’s most at-risk and under-served Latino youth, adults, and seniors, creating true social change.

Esperança’s bilingual and bi-cultural Community Health Educators come from the communities they serve.  Classes are held in community centers, clinics, schools, and HUD housing facilities to ensure maximum participation by eliminating unnecessary travel. In response to COVID-19, Esperança is continuing these collaborations to offer education virtually.

Our Mission

Improve health and provide hope through sustainable disease prevention, education, and treatment for every life we touch.

Su Salud con Sabor Latino (SSL)

SSL is a 12-session, evidence-based curriculum, aiming to empower Latino adults to improve health outcomes by changing behaviors and improving knowledge about nutrition and physical activity. Workshop topics include understanding food labels, hands-on food preparation, increasing water consumption, portion size, mindful eating, chronic diseases, mental health, oral health, and physical activity.

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP™)

DEEP™ is an evidence-based diabetes self-management program that was developed to empower Latinos to make informed decisions about their diagnosis of pre-diabetes and/or manage their diabetes. Curriculum topics include, but are not limited to, healthy eating, medication adherence, blood sugar monitoring, oral health, stress and depression, cardiovascular considerations, blood pressure, sodium intake, and physical activity.

Oral Health Education

Over half (52%) of Arizona’s
kindergarten children have a history of tooth decay, higher than the national average (36%). Esperança’s oral health workshops educate about the importance of proper daily hygiene practices and the need for routine dental visits. Esperança provides each participant with a Smile Bag that contains an age-appropriate toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss as well as referrals to dental providers who offer dental care at reduced/no cost.

Platicas (Talks)

Esperança conducts informal discussions for Latinos in the communities where they live. Platicas offer a unique opportunity for participants to direct the conversation by picking from a variety of health subjects. Topics include nutrition, heart disease, breast health, asthma, oral health, nutrition, etc.

Stove to Table

Every Tuesday, Esperança staff and volunteers cook 200 meals, using produce fresh from our community garden, which are delivered to seniors living in low-income housing. Sign up to volunteer today!

Spanish resources

In an effort to better serve the Hispanic community online, Esperança has put together a list of blogs and resources in English and Spanish to continue our education beyond the classroom.

Over 50,000 Families Served Since 2000

Since the program’s inception in 2000, Esperança in Arizona has been committed to serving the most vulnerable in our state through culturally appropriate prevention education taught in their native language.

One new focus for serving the senior population is the need for quality medical supplies like ostomy bags, adult diapers, diabetic supplies, and more. If you have new or gently used items, we encourage you to take a look at our full list of needs.

Make A Real Change In Someone’s Life

“I’m not making these healthy changes for just myself, but for my entire family, and my entire community.”
