When Gilberto woke up from the car accident, the doctors had terrible news. The 19-year-old would struggle to talk — and would never walk again. His head trauma was just too severe. It would have been easy for Gilberto to give up. To let creeping despair take root in his soul. Instead, the young man from Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Mexico chose to persevere.
But he wasn’t alone in this fight. He had the enduring love of his wife and skilled therapists that you provided through your faithful support of Esperança. Our partner in Mexico met Gilberto on the streets of Puerto Peñasco. With the help of his wife and a walker, Gilberto was moving forward at a pace of 20 minutes per block.
Gilberto Discovered New Hope with Esperança
Hearing his story and moved by his determination, our partner told Gilberto about the Center for Attention and Therapies for Children (C.A.T.I.), the only free program for children and youth with disabilities in Puerto Peñasco.

Your gifts helped open this clinic in January 2021. Before then, families had to travel up to 8 hours to reach the children’s hospital in Hermosillo. Sadly, many didn’t have the money to make the trip often, if at all.
Gilberto’s emotional and physical health slowly improved at C.A.T.I. For months, he fought through depression and doubts to take step
after painful step forward. Today, Gilberto can walk a block in 15 minutes! And his language skills have improved to the point in which he’s back at school.
Now he’s focused on a new goal: graduating and supporting his growing family. Gilberto and his wife are expecting their first child, which he calls simply “a blessing.”
