This year, National Public Health Week (NPHW) is celebrated on April 5-11, 2021.
So what is public health?
The American Public Health Association (APHA), leader of NPHW defines it as, “promoting and protecting the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play.” Here at Esperança, we believe that your race, education, income, and zip code should NOT determine the quality of your health or success.
Professionals and organizations like Esperança working in public health focus on the prevention of people getting sick or injured, rather treatment after the fact. If you are a supporter of Esperança, then YOU are an advocate for public health!
You might wonder, “what’s my role in public health?”
What can I do?
Well – I ask you to think about this past year with the COVID-19 pandemic. You played a role in preventing the spread of COVID by socially distancing, wearing a mask, and getting your COVID vaccination.
We’ve spent the past year physically distancing for the safety of others, but our sense of community grew stronger than ever – we connected with friends, relatives, support groups and more, all virtually! As we continue to find new ways to connect with our global community, we must remember how important it is for everyone to work together – and I can think of no better way to start than with this year’s NPHW theme, Building Bridges to Better Health.
You can make a difference by exploring the daily themes for NPHW 2021, where each day focuses on a specific public health topic. – Check out what might interest you and how you can make a difference!
