Womens Health Month – taking care of the caretakers

Submitted by: Jeri Royce, President & CEO

While both men and women are susceptible to various health conditions, some health issues affect women differently and more commonly. Would it surprise you to hear that many women’s health conditions go undiagnosed and that most drug trials do not include female test subjects?

In addition, women bear exclusive health concerns, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, menopause, and pregnancy. Women suffer higher heart attack deaths compared to men. Depression and anxiety exhibit more frequently among female patients. Urinary tract conditions present more often in females, and sexually transmitted disease can cause more harm to women. Is it any wonder, then, why May is Women’s Health Month?

I don’t think many of us would disagree that women play an important and somewhat unique role in society. As such, we need to pay attention to the health and well being of the women in our lives (including ourselves) whether they be friends or family. Women tend to care for everyone, everyone, everyone…but ourselves.

In celebration of Women’s Health Month this May, I’d like to share some tips with you:

  • Do daily exercise – sprinkling different forms of exercise throughout the week like yoga, weightlifting, and walking may make it a little easier to fit into your schedule.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables – sounds simple but does wonders for your health.
  • Take time to smell the roses – lift your head up occasionally and admire the beauty around you.
  • Visit a doctor - for a well-woman checkup and preventive screenings
  • Talk to or listen to friends – friends help us celebrate our good times and help us manage our bad times. Friends offer fresh perspectives and advice when it comes to making big and small life decisions.
  • Sleep more – sleep deprivation takes a toll on our mind, body, and spirit.

So, what are you going to do to take care of yourself during this month and into the future, and how will you encourage the women in your life to do the same?
